Your First AI Portrait: What to Expect

Thinking about ordering your first AI portrait but not sure what to expect? I get it. It’s new territory. Let me walk you through exactly what happens, so there are no surprises.

The Quick Version

  1. You send me a photo
  2. I create your portrait (1-2 days)
  3. You approve or request changes
  4. Premium printing and shipping (5-7 days)
  5. Beautiful art arrives at your door

That’s it. But let’s dig into each step.

Step 1: Choosing Your Photo

This is the most important part. The better your photo, the better your portrait.

What Makes a Great Photo

Good lighting — Natural light is best. Near a window during the day is perfect. Avoid harsh shadows across the face.

Clear focus — The face/eyes should be sharp, not blurry. Your phone’s portrait mode works great.

Good angle — Head-on or slight angle works best. Extreme side profiles can be tricky.

Close enough — I need to see details. A tiny dot in a landscape photo won’t work well.

Expression — Capture their personality! Alert ears, goofy tongue out, regal stare—whatever is them.

What to Avoid

  • Very dark photos — I can brighten a bit, but can’t invent detail that isn’t there
  • Heavy blur — Motion blur or out-of-focus shots limit what I can work with
  • Multiple pets overlapping — One clear subject works best
  • Screenshot of a screenshot — Use the original photo when possible

Don’t Have a Great Photo?

That’s okay! Send me what you have and I’ll be honest about what’s possible. Sometimes a less-than-ideal photo still produces beautiful results. Other times, I might suggest trying to get a better shot first.

I’d rather tell you upfront than take your money and deliver something disappointing.

Step 2: Choosing Your Style

I currently offer three main styles:

Watercolor

Best for: Soft, warm, emotional pieces. The “classic pet portrait” look. Vibe: Gentle color bleeds, visible texture, white paper showing through in spots. Feels like a traditional artist painted your pet.

Pencil

Best for: Detailed, realistic renderings. Captures fine fur textures. Vibe: Clean, precise, timeless. Like a skilled sketch artist spent hours studying your pet.

Charcoal

Best for: Dramatic, moody, artistic statements. Bold and striking. Vibe: Deep blacks, atmospheric, more contrast. Makes a real statement on the wall.

Not Sure Which to Pick?

Most people go with watercolor—it’s versatile and universally appealing. But if your pet has striking features (dramatic markings, intense eyes), charcoal can be stunning. Pencil is perfect if you want something more subtle and realistic.

When in doubt, ask me! I’m happy to recommend based on your photo.

Step 3: The Creation Process

Once you’ve ordered, here’s what I do:

Day 1: I analyze your photo. What makes this pet unique? What expression should I capture? What details matter most?

Generation: I craft detailed prompts tailored to your photo and chosen style. This isn’t “press button, get art”—it’s an iterative process of guiding the AI toward the right result.

Curation: I generate multiple versions and select the best one. The one that captures your pet’s personality. The one that’ll make you smile.

Quality check: Is it print-ready? Are the colors right? Any artifacts or weird details to fix?

Delivery: You receive your portrait proof via email within 1-2 days of ordering.

Step 4: Your Approval

You’ll receive an email with your portrait attached. Here’s what happens next:

If You Love It

Just reply and say so! I’ll send it to print immediately.

If Something’s Off

Tell me what’s bothering you. “The eyes look a little weird” or “Can the colors be warmer?” or “This doesn’t capture their expression.” I’ll generate a new version based on your feedback.

If You Really Hate It

That’s okay too. I offer full refunds, no questions asked. I’d rather you get your money back than have artwork you don’t love.

Seriously—my satisfaction guarantee means if you’re not happy, you don’t pay. No awkward negotiations, no “store credit only” games.

Step 5: Printing & Shipping

Once you approve, your portrait goes to print.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the whole process take?

From order to delivery: typically 7-10 days total. Rush options may be available—just ask.

Can I order multiple pets in one portrait?

Yes! It costs a bit more (additional $15 per pet) and works best when I have good photos of each.

What if my pet passed away and I only have old photos?

Memorial portraits are some of my most meaningful work. Old photos often work fine—I’ll be honest about quality limitations upfront. These orders get my extra attention.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes, but shipping takes longer (2-3 weeks) and costs more. Email me for a quote.

Can I get the digital file too?

Yes, I include a high-resolution digital file with every order. Print more copies, use it as a phone background, whatever you want.

What if I want a different style than watercolor/pencil/charcoal?

Ask! I’m experimenting with new styles. If I can do it well, I will.

Tips for the Best Experience

Send your best photo first. Don’t hold back thinking “I’ll send a better one later.” Start with your best.

Be specific about what you want. “Capture how goofy she is” or “He always looked regal” helps me nail it.

Respond to proofs. The faster you approve or give feedback, the faster you get your art.

Frame it properly. A good portrait deserves a good frame. I can recommend framing options if you want.
